Why are tourmaline gemstones rare and exclusive?
Although a lot of tourmaline can be found, much of the gemstones that are found are not suitable for jewellery making.
Where does tourmaline come from?
Mostly all of the tourmalines come from mountains in Brazil, U.S., Africa and Madagascar, Sri Lanka and Russia.
What colour does tourmaline have?
There are many different colours in tourmaline. For example blue tourmaline, so called Indigolite, comes from Brazil, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Africa. And the beautiful pink tourmalines come mainly from Californië. The most beautiful watermelon tourmaline comes from Brazil and Africa. They are called watermelon because of the green edges and the pink colour center.
Rough tourmaline is often cut into smooth cabochons, faceted rectangles or drop briolettes. For my jewellery designs I like the slices of tourmaline the most.
These slices are cut out of raw crystal tourmaline. The edges stay raw but the front and back are smoothly polished. That way you look right in the heart of the gemstone. Much often there are many different colours. These colours are so special and in sunlight they have such a beautiful electric radiance. You can't compare that with any other gemstone.
Extremely rare are the slices which are cut out of one crystal and make a pair together. Therefore the crystal must be big enough to accomplish that. And many times that isn't the case.
I make exclusive tourmaline earrings from these pairs. And I use the only ones for my tourmaline necklaces.
